A buzzing generation thriving on instant gratification. Constant visuals, media models, and the esteem of wealth. Yet, within each one of us, something more is calling for our attention. Listen. Can you hear it? Look. Can you see it?
The thrill of movies, latest gadgets, and flooded calendars. The moment-to-moment existence where no blank space resides. Please turn around and look at what you see. A young boy opening the door for the lady crossing wobbly centimeters, paying for gas with the last of her glass jar. The gentleman is late for work, stopping to change the tire of the tearful driver, her license only two days old. The jogger is stopping at the park bench cradling the lonely lady, exchanging lost loves and dreams.
In an instant, we can fill an empty heart, thrill the hungry soul, or turn around a life. Oh, no. You won’t need your wallets, your purses, or your cars. You just need a pair of eyes, an opened heart, and a brand new day.
Each day brings gratification, beautiful visuals, and awaiting love and connections. They say you find what you are looking for. The heart is the mind’s eye.
“Jerk! He cut me off! Who does he think he is?! Idiot! What?! I oughta….” Honk! Honk!
“Whoa! That was close! Good thing I was paying attention. He looks so worried. What’s wrong? The passenger seat is lying back. He’s driving so fast. I hope his wife is okay. Maybe he’s trying to get her to the hospital? God, watch over them.”
Which driver did you just see passing you? Which pair of eyes do you want looking at you? Who would I have been?
She’s coming in late again. Oh, my word! Who does she think she is? Does she have her own set of rules? Wish I had the gall to brisk in every day to the tick of my own clock! Oh, dear. Could it be? No! We can’t believe it. The sweat on her brow leaves the trace of an unwelcomed hand. A sweeping of fury leaving deep pain. A swell hints its presence, longing for ice. She took a little longer getting ready today. This morning’s mirror heard her. “My makeup is just right. No one will know. No one will see. Just smile, just smile. Laugh ‘cause your late. You’ve always been that way. Right?”
She’s dancing; she’s skipping, down the halls of first grade. “Stop that, little Miss Anna! We don’t behave in that way! Walk like a lady, don’t break the rules today! Don’t you dally! Be on your little way.” Melting into sunken shoulders, she slows to a simmering pace. Heartache now oozing from her tender, little face. Getting ready had been a special task today.
“Grandma, Mommy’s coming for her visit today! This is the best day of the year!” Only a day. Only today. Her Mommy is being taken away. A moment of joy robbed to abide by the rules. Can we stop for just a moment to see the hearts within our schools?
Another new house? Another new car? Ugh! That’s disgusting! They don’t have a clue what life is really like. Such a perfect little life, employment…no strife! They never are home. They’re always about. Coming in late at night and off with morning’s light. Adventure and explorations…it must be nice!
Insurance claims paved this new path, just 5 years ago today. Tender lives lost, still one hanging just by a thread. Machines and tubes whispering each tiny, innocent breath.
“Honey, tell Joey of when he used to tickle his sisters. Tell him how their tummies turned into Joey Jelly. He always liked that part. Did you see that? I think he heard you. I really think he heard you.” “Time to go, Honey. You need your rest. We’ll be back first thing. Joey will be waiting, I promise. I promise.”
Take a look. Look closely. Look, just once again. Look beyond the surface and look within the soul. What do they see? What do they feel? What are you looking for?
I see. I see so clearly now. No not the reflection in the mirror, but a heart, a soul. It’s a little bruised and weathered, but still so full…so very, very full. I want to see the worried eyes, the lonely hearts, skipping legs, and the wobbling knees. Listen. Watch. Open your heart. See them. They need you. Feel the joys of life and celebrate with them. Look at the beauty within every person you greet. Look through their window. What do they see? What do they feel? Do they even have a window? My window needs a little dusting, a crack or two filled. It will sparkle again. Watch out, Windex! I’m here…alive again.
Life is beautiful. Let’s open our windows and let the light in. Together, weathering the storms and reigning in the winds. Let’s skip with our children and sway with the breeze. Embrace those sprinkled with tears and calm their crippling fears. Our world is so colorful, so vibrant, so pure.
Life sent us an invitation, just waiting for our reply. Celebrate today, I celebrate you. I SEE you.
